It may not have been given much of a mention in the footballer’s recent autobiography, but Camtex’s renowned Cambrelle® footwear lining can fairly be claimed to have played its own small part in making Roy Keane the household name that he is today.

As an integral component of Diadora’s professional-level ‘Brasil’ football boot, the lining was until recently worn every match day by the Manchester United Captain and ex-Ireland International, where its carefully engineered structure performed a vital role in helping the player’s feet stay fresh and supple for the duration of the game.

In a wider context, Roy Keane’s unknowing patronage of Cambrelle® underscores the increasing inroads being made by the lining into the top-end football boot market. Though it remains best known for its outdoor applications, Cambrelle® has in recent years found a ready market in the football arena, where the cushioning and sweat absorbing characteristics have been equally well received. One of the latest converts is the German sportswear giant Puma which uses the lining for its high-end ‘King SL’, the boot of choice of the Southampton FC and England striker James Beattie and the Italian and Juventus goalkeeper, Gianluigi Buffon.

“As an internal lining, Cambrelle® has never been the footwear world’s most visible product,” comments Kieran O’Hare, managing director of UK-based Camtex. “But that is not to say that its benefits are going unrecognised among the world’s top sporting brands who appreciate the comfort and quality appearance it imparts to the finished product. Though the Cambrelle® name remains synonymous with the great outdoors, it’s an interesting new direction for the brand and one we hope will result in the characteristic pique pattern of the lining appearing in more of the boots worn by the world’s top footballers.”
